Funeral Homes in Our Area Adjusting to New Guidelines in Wake of COVID-19

The funeral industry is considered an “essential businesses” as they were authorized as infrastructure for first responders by Homeland Security.

However, that doesn’t mean that everything will stay the same. In fact, there are many new changes to the way funeral homes will operate while COVID-19 is around.

Locally in Millbrook, Brookside Funeral Home has felt the changes because of the virus. Many new guidelines have been created that limit the amount of people that will be allowed at a funeral, says Brookside Owner, Chris Thompson.

“Currently we are only allowing graveside services, of which are only limited to 10 immediate family members. Each person has to stay 6 feet apart,” Thompson said. “This is a very, very active virus that is contagious and people need to take it seriously. If it all possible, stay at home and flatten the curve.”

Thompson says the staff has had limited access to the facility but that they are virtually webcasting meetings to continue many of their operations.

“We’re still here to accommodate families in any way that we can,” Thompson said. “Everyone has been so receptive and understanding about the new guidelines that we’re carrying out. Funerals are extremely sensitive things, and we hope and pray that families will want to maintain their health and protection.”

Funeral home workers are not immune to the disease, that’s why Thompson wants everyone to take this virus seriously and not put first responders at any risk.

“If any of us come down with COVID-19 then we won’t be able to provide an essential service to the community. We have a wonderful community here in Millbrook, so please continue to support one another by staying home and following the regulations that have been put into place,” Thompson said.

Brookside Funeral Home will still be open for normal hours and can be contacted at (334) 285-7442 for any further questions.
