The 1st Annual Battle on the Coosa was held Monday night at the Wetumpka Sportsplex. The 7 on 7 girls flag football pre-season tournament featured the host Wetumpka Indians, along with Carver, Baldwin County, Holtville, and Stanhope Elmore. Each team played the other teams in a scrimmage with a 20-minute running clock.

The 2026 season will be the first year flag football teams have been fielded at Holtville and Stanhope Elmore, and the Battle on the Coosa was a good opportunity for the coaches at both schools to see how their players respond in a game-type atmosphere.

Holtville Coach Slade Holley was missing several members of his team, but he was happy with what he saw from the players that participated.

“I just would like to emphasize how well our girls competed and never gave up,” said Coach Holley. “We showed up with 12 girls and played 6 games. We had eight girls gone to church camp and had to do a lot of moving around to put a starting seven on both sides of the ball. All the girls filled roles when needed and played with heart all night. We are very proud of these girls and how bought in they are to learn and do what it takes to win.”

Over in Millbrook, the Mustangs first ever flag football team is coached by Kashundra Davis. The Mustangs got a tough opponent in their first match against Carver. After a bye during round two, the Mustangs faced Wetumpka. Both teams’ defenses excelled, with neither team finding the end zone.

“One of the biggest things I learned last night is that this team has the ability to respond positively to adversity,” said Coach Davis. “We definitely got punched in the mouth during that first game, but instead of letting it define us, the girls regrouped, competed harder, and improved with each game that followed. There’s no substitute for live game experience, and last night gave me the opportunity to play with everyone and see how they responded in real game situations. We definitely have areas where we need to improve, but that’s exactly what these early scrimmages are for. I’m excited about the potential of this group and what I believe this team can accomplish as we continue to grow throughout the season.”

The Mustangs’ first ever flag football game is scheduled against JAG for Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at 17 Springs.
