Autauga County Commission Chair Elected President of Statewide Association

Jay Thompson unanimously selected for ACCA top leadership position

Autauga County Commission Chair Jay Thompson has been elected the 2022-2023 President of the Association of County Commissions of Alabama (ACCA), the statewide association representing Alabama’s 67 county governments. Thompson was elected to the position at the ACCA 94th Annual Convention held August 23-25.

“ACCA has served as the leading, unified voice on behalf of Alabama’s 67 counties for nearly a century,” Thompson said. “When county leaders throughout the state engage in this Association and collaborate with its members and partners, we are strongest. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to lead the Alabama County Family as its President, and I am eager to continue making a positive impact for Alabamians statewide alongside those elected with me.”

Before being unanimously elected as ACCA’s President, Thompson served as ACCA President-Elect and Vice President for consecutive terms. Thompson also served as an active member of the ACCA Board of Directors and the ACCA Legislative Committee. Additionally, Thompson completed ACCA’s premier leadership program for second-term commissioners — PLAN, which stands for Passion, Leadership, Accountability and Networking.

ACCA Executive Director Sonny Brasfield expressed his confidence in Thompson’s ability to serve the Association’s membership, saying: “Chairman Thompson is an enthusiastic and knowledgeable leader dedicated to serving the Association and our membership. He understands the intricacies of both urban and rural county governments in Alabama, and I’m certain his spirit as a county government advocate will serve the Association and our state remarkably well. We’re looking forward to a successful year with Chairman Thompson at the helm.”

In addition to his ten years of county commission service, Thompson worked for 20 years in residential construction and development before being named the new construction coordinator for the Autauga County Board of Education. Thompson also remains a devoted father and enjoys coaching youth sports and participating in his children’s activities.

The Association of County Commissions of Alabama is a statewide organization speaking for all 67 counties with ONE voice. It promotes improved county government services in Alabama, offers educational programs for county officials and their staff members, administers insurance programs for county governments and employees, offers legal advice, and represents the interests of county government before state and federal organizations and agencies.
