William Dunlap, 46, of Montgomery In Custody after High Speed Pursuit with Millbrook Police

BY CHIEF P.K. JOHNSON

MILLBROOK POLICE DEPARTMENT

On Monday, December 20, 2021, at approximately 2:27 A.M., Millbrook police officers attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle in the 2200 block of Cobbs Ford Road. The vehicle accelerated upon observing law enforcement and prior to the officer engaging his emergency equipment.

The vehicle proceeded southbound on I-65, into Montgomery, at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. The vehicle attempted to enter I-85, at the I-65/I-85 interchange, where the driver lost control and wrecked his vehicle. The driver attempted to gain access to a knife as officers approached. Minimal force was used to detain the offender, who sustained a laceration to his head, as a result of the collision.

The offender was treated at the scene by Montgomery fire rescue personnel and was later transported to Jackson Hospital, where he received treatment for his injuries. Officers located a catalytic converter and cutting tools inside the offender’s vehicle, which was impounded pursuant to the arrest.

Upon his release, the offender, later identified as William Dunlap, a 46-year-old Montgomery resident, was placed under arrest, being charged with Attempting to Elude Law Enforcement, Resisting Arrest, and an outstanding Failure to Appear warrant held by this agency. The offender was transported to the Elmore County Jail, where he remains in custody under a $2,500.00 bond.

This case remains under investigation and additional charges may be forthcoming.

I am extremely proud of our officers, who exercised a tremendous amount of restraint in apprehending this individual, who by his action demonstrated a total disregard for the safety of others while fleeing law enforcement. He also sought to arm himself with a knife while actively resisting arrest after wrecking his vehicle. This situation could have ended much worse than it did.

Fortunately, no one other than the offender was injured, as a result of his reckless actions. The offender did sustain a laceration to his forehead, as a result of colliding with a barrier adjacent to the interstate. Our officers were able to take him into custody, using a minimal amount of force.

While impounding the offender’s vehicle, officers located cutting tools and a catalytic converter inside the vehicle. Base on the offender’s previous criminal history it’s entirely possible that the property in question may not belong to him. Our investigators will be following up with area law enforcement to ascertain if the property in question was illegally obtained. If so, additional charges will be placed on this individual. He may be spending Christmas in Elmore County.
