Free steps to prevent your packages from being stolen

Send packages to a secure location

Major retailers provide secure methods of deliver. Amazon, for example, has Amazon Lockers where you can send all Amazon orders to. Here’s a tool to find Amazon Pickup Locations near you. It’s easy to use, and if you are okay with taking the extra step of picking your packages up away from home, this is an excellent way to avoid package theft.

Alternatively, you can ship packages to your workplace, though we recommend checking your workplace policies to ensure you are being compliant with policy prior to adding your workplace address to any online order.

Provide delivery instructions

For those choosing to ship packages to their homes, providing delivery instructions is one free way to prevent package theft. In the checkout process for online orders, you can add specific delivery instructions for delivery professionals to follow. If you have a column, a bench, or something large that packages can be delivered behind, out of site from porch pirates, you can improve your chances that someone won’t be tempted to run off with your package.

Schedule packages to arrive when you’re home, then track their progress.

If there are days when you are home, you can try to submit your orders so they arrive on days when you’re home and can quickly bring packages into your home. You can also delay or re-route packages from the following carriers using the following apps:

•             FedEx Delivery Manager® | $5 to download

•             UPS My Choice® | $40 per year for unlimited use

•             USPS Hold Mail | Free service

If you’re anticipating a package from a family member or friend, ask for the tracking number so you can monitor when the package will arrive.

Amazon now provides real-time tracking of your packages so you know precisely when the delivery truck left the garage, and when the package is scheduled to arrive on your door. You can track your packages by downloading the Amazon app, then tapping “Your Orders” and locating your expected delivery.

Require a signature

As part of the online checkout process, you may have the option to require that the package can only be delivered with a signature. If you are able to be home during the delivery, this requirement adds a layer of security because it prevents your package from sitting unattended on your doorstep for any length of time.
