Elmore Autauga News
According to the National Weather Service at Birmingham, our area is under a level 3 for the possibility of severe storms this afternoon and evening. In the event our areas are put under a tornado watch, the Safer Places program is available for those who desire a more secure structure. Please see information below, as well as links to Safer Places that may be open and whether or not they accept pets.
SAFER PLACES INFORMATIONAL POST
When there is a threat of severe weather for Elmore County: The EMA office will activate our Safer Places IF we are placed under a Tornado Watch. When we activate the Safer Places, they respond to let us know if they can open. We will then update our website map and post the locations that are opening on our social media pages.
NWS Birmingham tries to issue tornado watches 3-5 hours before they expect the severe weather to arrive. That should be time to receive the information and to get to a Safer Place before the main threat arrives. The map for the Safer Places can be found in the Elmore County EMA app or at https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer…
In advance of the storms, some Safer Places may post that they are open or will open. That is great! Not all Safer Places can give notice in advance so EMA will remain consistent and activate the Safer Places and post the update after/if Elmore County is placed under a tornado watch.
As always, we encourage people to have multiple ways to receive severe weather warnings like a NOAA weather radio and smart device apps like Baron Saf-T-Net or Elmore County EMA app. If you have a smartphone you can get weather alerts, preparedness information, and quick access to the Safer Places map using the Elmore County EMA app. Get the Elmore County AL EMA mobile app at: https://apps.myocv.com/share/a38636092
Remember: BE PREPARED, NOT SCARED
