For more than 35 years, Kim Smith has used her chair behind the salon not just as a place for styling hair, but as a space for encouragement, compassion and connection. Through her work in the community and her involvement with Successful Connections, Smith has become known by many as someone who quietly steps in when people need help most.
Now recognized as a community “Difference Maker,” Smith said her passion for serving others was shaped long before she began helping families through outreach and resource programs.
“My upbringing taught me the value of compassion and resilience,” Smith said. “I grew up understanding that life is not always easy, but you still have a responsibility to keep going and to help others when you can.”
Smith said the biggest influences in her life were her grandmother and mother, who taught her lessons about faith, perseverance and service to others.
“I learned that you do not have to have everything to give something,” Smith said. “Sometimes your time, encouragement, wisdom or willingness to listen can change someone’s day or even their life.”
Those lessons stayed with her throughout childhood, where she saw firsthand how many people quietly carry burdens without support or encouragement.
“Some people need food, clothing, support, encouragement or simply someone who cares,” Smith said. “Helping others is not always about doing something big. Sometimes it is about meeting a simple need with love and respect.”
Smith said her experiences growing up also taught her not to judge others based on where they are in life.
“Everyone has a story, and everyone goes through seasons where they need support,” she said. “A strong community is not built by people looking down on one another. It is built when people reach back, lift others up and create space for people to grow.”
That mindset eventually carried into her career as a hairstylist, where she discovered how deeply personal service can impact someone’s confidence and emotional well-being.
“For over three decades, I have had the opportunity to serve people in a personal way,” Smith said. “Creating a hairstyle for someone is not just about hair. It can lift their spirit, restore confidence and help them feel seen.”
Today, Smith continues that same mission through Successful Connections, an organization focused on helping individuals and families access resources, support and encouragement.
“My life experiences have made me more compassionate, more patient and more determined,” Smith said. “People need more than a handout. They need encouragement, resources, relationships and sometimes someone who believes in them until they can believe in themselves.”
She said some of the most meaningful moments come from watching people walk away with a renewed sense of hope after receiving help.
“Sometimes people walk in carrying shame or stress, and by the time they leave, you can see relief on their face,” Smith said. “It may seem simple to some people, but to the person receiving help, it can mean everything.”
Even through challenges, Smith said her faith and the growing needs in the community continue to motivate her work.
“People are struggling, and many do not know where to turn,” she said. “My faith, my passion for helping people and the impact I see in the community keep me moving forward.”
As she continues serving others, Smith hopes the next generation learns that making a difference does not require wealth, status or perfect timing.
“You can start by caring, showing up and using what you have to help somebody else,” Smith said.
For Smith, being a difference maker is not about recognition, but about consistently showing compassion and creating opportunities for others to move forward. Through small acts of kindness, steady encouragement and years of service, she continues helping strengthen the community one person at a time.
