MILLBROOK POLICE DEPARTMENT

On Monday, October 3, 2022, at approximately 4:19 PM, Millbrook police responded to Legacy Park, located in the 1800 block of Deatsville Highway, with regard to a civil disturbance, which involved several juveniles and young adults. One person was arrested.

Upon arrival, officers separated a group of individuals, who appeared to be involved in an altercation, detaining several individuals and impounding two handguns that were located at the scene. Once order was restored, officers were able to ascertain that several of the juveniles were involved in a verbal dispute that began at school earlier today, which was apparently rekindled at the park. One of the individuals, who was later identified as Keldric O. Jones, 23, of Montgomery, was placed under arrest, being charged with Unlawfully Carrying a Pistol. Jones was transported to the Millbrook Police Department, where he was processed and later released, having satisfied bond requirements.

We are pleased that this situation was resolved without anyone being injured, particularly the juveniles involved. That said, there is no place in our City that this behavior is acceptable, nor will it be tolerated, particularly our City parks. This is where our citizens and their children have a constant presence. I personally responded to this call, due to its nature and the location. Upon my arrival, I was shocked to see the number of people involved, the ages of some and the fact that adults were involved.

Despite the fact that numerous patrol vehicles were present, there were multiple citizens, who were not participants in this disturbance present, as well as several citizens with children in tow, pulling into the park during our investigation into this incident. I appreciate our officers prompt response and the fact that they were able to quickly deescalate this situation and restore order. Had this incident occurred later in the afternoon there would have been many more people in the park, with most of them being minor children.

The City of Millbrook’s Parks and Recreation Department has provided and maintains several beautiful parks throughout our city for our citizens to enjoy recreational opportunities and outdoor activities. This type of behavior will not be tolerated in any shape, form or fashion.

As I shared with the group of individuals we encountered this afternoon, we value our citizens right to enjoy our facilities without being unnecessarily exposed to this type of violence or the inherent danger that comes with it when you introduce the presence of firearms into a volatile situation, where emotions and violence mix.

I want to strongly reiterate what I said earlier. We will not tolerate this behavior in our City! If you engage in violent activity, particularly in a public place frequented by children, and you do so armed…… We will arrest you and prosecute you to the fullest extent that the law allows. Make no mistake, we will protect our citizens, particularly our children.
