Troopers Report Fatality Thursday after Two-Vehicle Crash near Smiths Station

OPELIKA POST – A two-vehicle crash at approximately 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, has claimed the life of a Salem man. William A. Kent, 61, was killed when the 2002 Subaru Forrester he was driving collided with a 2006 Ford Mustang. Kent, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Ford, Rafer E. Springfield, 18, of Phenix City, was transported to an area hospital for treatment. The crash occurred on Lee County 240 near Lee County 241, approximately one and one-half miles west of Smiths Station. Nothing further is available as Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate.
