Wayne Scoggins was a Wealth of Information in Prattville; A Smile or Hug when You Needed One

BY SARAH STEPHENS

ELMORE/AUTAUGA NEWS

Wayne Scoggins was a proud American, a man about Prattville town, a hug or a smile when you needed one, and known to pick up the tab at Fox’s Pizza for “the purty girls.” He also had the honorary title of “Mayor of Hunt’s Alley” where he loved to call home.

I learned a couple of days ago that Wayne had passed away after a long health battle.

I started looking through my phone for a couple of pictures of a very hot day in May, 2019. If you knew how many photos I have in my phone, you would understand the challenge. But I was eventually successful.

My sisters were in town for a visit at that time last year, and as always, they wanted to head to downtown Prattville. It is always on their “must do” list while they are in town. They love the history, the shopping and the restaurants.

We had done the touring and decided it was time to eat. We made our way to Fox’s Pizza and I remember that blast of air conditioning bringing much relief. We were seated at a table and I looked up to see Mr. Wayne across the way, sipping on a cold drink. I made my way over to him and we chatted a bit. He was smiling as always, giving me some “news of the day” and we had a good visit. I introduced him to my sisters, then headed back to the table.

When it was time to go we asked for our ticket and the waitress just smiled. “That has already been taken care of,” she said with a smile and a nod in Wayne’s direction. Oh, that rascal!

We all met back over at his table for hugs and big thank yous and a group photo. Outside I captured him on his scooter and his beloved Keiko!

He gave some interesting information about Prattville to the sisters, flirted like only he could do, and eventually I watched him scoot back towards home with that American Flag flying proudly waving.

I have met a lot of folks in my years as a reporter. I have always said that everyone has a story, but only if they are willing to talk about it. Wayne was always helpful to me when it came to information on Prattville and I always asked, “So, when can I do a story on you?” He would flash those eyes, pretend to be shy, and say, “Some day.”

Rest well my friend. You were many things, but definitely one of my favorite Prattvillians. My next walk downtown will not be the same when I don’t see you scooting along and flirting with the ladies.

I have learned that his family is asking for anyone who wants to remember Wayne, please consider making a donation in his name to the Autauga County Heritage Association or Autauga Creek Improvement Committee. He was absolutely a friend to the “Creek Freaks” and so many more that will never forget him. I know he is reunited with his wife and Keiko.

If guardian angels exist, downtown Prattville should know they will have the best one ever.

Rest well my friend.
