U.S. Flag Tribute Planned for Funeral of Benjamin Wood, Last Known Autauga Resident to Serve in WWII

From Larry Caver, President

Old Autauga Historical Society (OAHS)

The funeral for Autauga County resident Benjamin “Russell” Wood, 95, of Statesville will be held Friday at Ivy Creek Methodist Church at 3 p.m.

The funeral is for family only, however, volunteers are asked to participate in a U.S. Flag Tribute. Those wishing to take part are asked to be at the church no later than 1:30 p.m. as Wood’s body should arrive at the church around 1:45 p.m.

We ask that volunteers carpool if possible. We will park on the right side of church, but this space may fill up quickly. Parking may be limited. Volunteers will not go inside church as space will be reserved for relatives. We have some extra flags to use. If you need a flag or more information, contact Larry Caver, phone 318-2568

Russell is believed to be the last native-born resident who served in WWII. He was born, lived, and died in Autauga County. Russell played baseball as a young man for the Autaugaville semi-pro team. He was also a member of the County Board of Revenue for several years.

We extend our condolences to his widow, Catherine, and son Rusty, who are both members of OAHS, as well as to his daughters, Catherine and Becky, and host of other relatives.
