The Autauga County Commission honored Autaugaville Councilman Gregary Palmer, who passed away early last month.

The commission presented a resolution mourning the death of Palmer, read in by Autauga County Attorney Kyle Shirley.

Palmer passed away August 5th at the age of 63 years old, leaving behind his mother, two sisters, three brothers as well as many nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends.

“As the town attorney for Autaugaville, I can say that Councilman Palmer is one of the good ones. He served without pay down there. And every time you saw him, he was focused on what he could do to improve the community, and he will definitely leave a big hole in the town,” Shirley said.

Born in Dallas County, Palmer later attended and graduated from Autaugaville High School in 1979 as student government president, while also playing drums in the student marching band and a student bus driver.

Palmer was deeply rooted in the Autaugaville community and was currently serving as a member of the Autaugaville town council, elected in 2020.

Not only was Palmer integrated into the community that shaped him, he’s also a veteran of the United States Air Force. The resolution also confirmed that Palmer was an active member in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, where he served in many capacities over the years. At the time of his death he was serving as steward on the financial team and with the health and wellness initiative and was active in mentoring other church organizations and leaders.

Among many of his accolades, Councilman Palmer served his church on the Board of Trustees as Secretary of Finance, President of the Usher Board, with the AME State Choir and as a delegate to many annual conferences.

The resolution stated that Palmer’s immeasurable commitment to and legacy of community and public service will be hard to match and will live on as an inspiration to us all the servants for the community where we live.

Autaugaville Mayor Curtis Stoudemire accepted the resolution on behalf of the Palmer family who was not able to make it to the meeting Tuesday evening. Shirley confirmed that the resolution will be read at an Autaugaville Town Council meeting at a later date.
