Family requesting ‘Final Ride’ for two-year-old Kaidyn Mullins Saturday

ELMORE/AUTAUGA NEWS

UPDATED July 26, 2023 with new information from Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin concerning the investigation.

Kaidyn Mullins, 2, of Wetumpka, tragically lost his life July 22nd due to an accidental gunshot and his family has asked all area f ire departments, police, EMS vehicles and personnel if you could please honor him with a last ride. He loved everything about police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, motorcycles.

Info for the ride:

At Bonners Point in Holtville the ride will pull out at noon Saturday. The ride will take Hwy. 111 to Ceasarville Road. At the end take a left onto Hwy 143. Take a right onto Hwy 14 and it will end at Prattville Memorial Gardens on Hwy 14. Those who wish to stay are more than welcome. But all vehicles and help will be greatly appreciated. The family asks, “Let’s show this little boy he will never be forgotten and think of his smiling face looking down on us.”

Elmore county sheriff’s deputies will be handling traffic up to the county line at Hwy 14 and I65. It is expected that as the procession moves through other areas, other agencies will assist with traffic as well.

Kaidyn passed away in the early morning hours of July 22 due to a tragic accident involving a handgun in the home. The case was investigated by the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Bill Franklin confirmed this appears to be a horrific accident, and there is no foul play involved.

Franklin said that in the early morning hours Saturday, an adult in the home thought they heard some type of disturbance and retrieved a personal firearm. When the adult found nothing out of the ordinary, the gun was inadvertently left on a nightstand. A short time later, the adult woke to the sound of a single gunshot, and found the child with fatal injuries. Franklin said it appears the toddler woke during the night and found the gun, and was able to pull the trigger, striking him in the upper torso.

Haynes Ambulance was called as well as medics, but the child could not be saved.

“This is just a horrific thing, and I know the family is going through a horrible time,” Sheriff Franklin said.

He urges families, particularly those with small children, to have a safety plan in place at all times if firearms are in the home. “Again, this was just a horrible accident and our prayers are with the family,” Sheriff Franklin said. “This isn’t the first time something like this has happened, and sadly it could happen again. We just hope it doesn’t.”
