The Central Alabama Aging Consortium (CAAC) will host a World Elder Abuse Awareness Day event on Tuesday, June 17, from 10 a.m. until eleven at the Millbrook Senior Center, located at 3771 Grandview Road in Millbrook.

The event will bring together senior advocates, law enforcement officials, state leaders, and community members to raise awareness about elder abuse, neglect, financial exploitation, and scams targeting older adults.

Featured speakers will include:

• Jean Brown, Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Senior Services
• Montgomery County District Attorney Azzie Melton Oliver
• Representatives from the Alabama Attorney General’s Office
• Additional officials involved in elder protection and law enforcement

The event will conclude with the traditional World Elder Abuse Awareness Day bubble release, in which attendees blow bubbles into the air to symbolize older adults whose abuse, neglect, or exploitation has gone unseen or unreported.

Organizers say the event is intended not only to educate the public, but also to encourage families and caregivers to recognize warning signs and report concerns before abuse escalates.

“Elder abuse often happens behind closed doors,” organizers said. “Many older adults suffer in silence from financial scams, neglect, intimidation, or exploitation. Awareness events like this remind our communities that protecting seniors is everyone’s responsibility.”

CAAC officials note that scams targeting seniors continue to evolve, including fake Medicare calls, computer scams, AI-generated voice impersonations, fraudulent medical equipment offers, and financial exploitation schemes.

MEDIA VISUALS AND INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITIES WILL INCLUDE:

• Bubble release ceremony at approximately noon
• Remarks from senior state officials and prosecutors
• Interviews with elder protection advocates
• Community participation and awareness activities

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is observed internationally each June to call attention to the abuse and mistreatment of older adults and to promote dignity, safety, and respect for aging populations.
