June is recognized as Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month in Alabama and focuses on promoting brain health, early detection, and support for families. More than 103,600 Alabamians are living with Alzheimer’s disease. As an Alzheimer’s Association and 20-year hospice volunteer, I have seen first-hand the impact this disease has on people and their families.
New blood tests now detect Alzheimer’s disease before symptoms appear allowing access to early treatment, trials and planning. However, Medicare coverage of routine blood screenings is not automatic. The bipartisan Alzheimer’s Screening and Prevention (ASAP) Act would fix this and help ensure access to dementia blood tests.
This is a public health issue that requires a policy response. Please join me in urging Representative Gary Palmer to support the Alzheimer’s Screening and Prevention (ASAP) Act. Supporting the ASAP Act is not just the right thing to do, it is a critical investment in the health of our entire community.
