Ongoing preservation efforts at the historic Vine Hill Presbyterian Church continue to gain momentum as recent upgrades and future plans reflect a growing community commitment to restoring the 1887 landmark.
The Old Autauga Historical Society has worked on the site since 2020, focusing on stabilizing and improving the long-closed church while maintaining its historic integrity. The building, which has been closed since 1990, sits on property that includes the church, a cemetery, and seven acres of land. Ownership of the property was officially transferred to the society in 2025, marking a turning point in long-term preservation efforts.
Recent updates have been made possible entirely through private donations. In October 2025, a ramp was added to improve accessibility, followed by the installation of a septic tank in February 2026. Both projects represent key steps toward making the site usable for future community events and gatherings.
Despite this progress, additional needs remain. The organization is seeking funding for a water meter, as well as water lines and plumbing, which are necessary for the next phase of development. Plans also include constructing a bathhouse, as the church historically never had indoor plumbing. The proposed structure, which will include separate restrooms for men and women, is expected to range in size from 12-by-16 feet to 16-by-20 feet, depending on available funding. They also plan to naturalize the land around the church and cemetery for greater use as a private park.
Limitations on funding sources present ongoing challenges. The society cannot use historical funds to build new structures, such as the bathhouse, and no new grants are expected in 2026, making community donations critical to continued progress.
“We hope the bathrooms will make the historic church more accessible for weddings, family gatherings, and club events,” said Larry Caver, president of the Old Autauga Historical Society. “The organization extends its heartfelt thanks for all donations to the project. The society is a 501(c)(3), and donations are tax-deductible.”
As restoration work continues, the project remains rooted in local support, with volunteers and donors working to ensure the site can once again serve the community. The future of Vine Hill Presbyterian Church now depends on sustained engagement, as preservation leaders look to complete essential improvements and secure the building’s role as a community asset for years to come.
The Old Autauga Historical Society is seeking volunteers to help build the planned bathhouse, along with additional financial donations for materials.
The group has about $5,000 available and needs at least $3,000 more to cover building costs. Donations of any amount are accepted.
Annual membership is $10, with a portion of each membership supporting preservation projects and related efforts.
