Shelters give thanks as staff work through holiday to care for animals

From: Rea Cord, Executive Director

Humane Society of Elmore County

Thanksgiving week is the week to spend time with family and friends, giving thanks and enjoying great food together. While we are all enjoying some down time, staff members in every shelter across the country will be at work cleaning, feeding and making sure the animals in their care are all well taken care of as animal welfare work is a 365 day/year labor of love.

Those of us in shelters also have many people to be thankful for such as our dedicated volunteer board members, our dedicated dog exercisers and all those volunteers who make our Tailโ€™s End Thrift Store such a success. Our foster families are a beloved extension of our staff as they help us care for even more pets in their own homes, providing love and a great start to successful adoptions. We greatly appreciate the partnership we have with animal control officers who work diligently protect the public and help animals in need throughout Elmore County.

Because of their love for animals and support to shelters, we owe big thanks to veterinarians and their staffs who see our pets post-adoption, help keep pets healthy, educate pet owners, and treat the injured and sick pets that so desperately need their help.

To all who donate money, food, supplies and Tail’s End Thrift Store donations whether that be individuals, local businesses, civic groups, clubs and more, we are humbled and grateful not only for your donations but for your faith in our work to help the almost 4,000 animals that come to us annually.

We are indebted to all of those who commit to the love and care of their pets for the life of those pets, whether adopted from a shelter or not. Every day we strive to place our pets in loving and committed homes so that they never again have to experience being discarded. Our pets enhance our human lives in so many ways, and we are grateful for the selfless love, joy and companionship they bring to our homes and families.

We hope everyone has a family filled Thanksgiving and so that our staff can also enjoy some time with family, the shelter will be closed Thursday and Friday, Nov. 27-28, but will be back open on Saturday, Nov. 29. Our Tailโ€™s End Thrift Store, however, will be open for Black Friday sales on the 28th, so stop by for great deals throughout the store. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
