The Alabama Commission on Higher Education and the Alabama Department of Education joined the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees on Wednesday, December 14, for a joint meeting and luncheon. The joint meeting is held annually and shares how, together, each entity serves Alabama’s residents with education and workforce training opportunities.

This year’s meeting was held in the Board Room of the Alabama Community College System. Dr. Eric Mackey, State Superintendent of Education, thanked both the ACCS and ACHE for their efforts to strengthen higher education.

“We are sending more kids to college than we have before and a big part of that is the partnership that Alabama’s community colleges have with us,” he said.

“We’re doing our part through our high school counselors, principals and career coaches, … but there’s not a president in the community college system that doesn’t work with their local high school. We appreciate it because it’s helping us build a better Alabama.”

Highest for-credit enrollment since 2017 reported at Alabama’s two-year colleges

MONTGOMERY— Spring registrations for classes throughout the Alabama Community College System are higher than they were this time last year, building on the momentum from increased fall semester enrollment and marking the third consecutive year for enrollment increases statewide.

Fall semester enrollment in for-credit academic and technical programs rose more than 6 percent from 78,524 students in 2022 to 83,509 in 2023. This year’s fall enrollment is the highest the system experienced since Fall 2017, when for-credit enrollment was 81,139.

The current enrollment growth represents the third consecutive year of for-credit enrollment increases across the Alabama Community College System, bucking national trends for community colleges. According to the National Student Clearinghouse, community colleges nationally grew by about 4 percent in the fall term.
