A Millbrook woman was rescued from her house during a fire by the Millbrook Fire Department Friday morning. She remains hospitalized, but is expected to survive. Two dogs in the home were also rescued and are safe.

The older female was alone in her Main Street home around 11 a.m. Friday when a fire erupted on the back porch. Smoke and flames were visible from the back of the home when Millbrook firefighters arrived, according to Millbrook Fire Chief Larry Brown.

The call for help came through a fire alarm activation in the woman’s home and not a call to 911.

“Had it not been for the fire alarm call, there is no doubt the woman would not have survived,” Chief Brown said.

Brown said that a firefighter, identified as Austin Brosius, entered through the back of the home as other firefighters worked to lay a water line and begin knocking down the flames. The home was completely filled with black smoke, but the firefighter who entered could hear someone calling for help. The woman was found in the front of the house and carried to safety by Brosius through a back door.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze, and give immediate treatment to the woman. She was transported to Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery.

We are so thankful for our area First Responders.

The fire remains under investigation, and the woman is not being publicly identified at this time as she continues healing.

On any given day, a fire alarm call is received by area departments, and in most cases, it is accidental. It could be easy to get complacent, but Brown stressed that is why every call is taken seriously.

“Everything we do in firefighting is a team effort, but we are very proud of Austin Brosius for helping to save this woman’s life,” Chief Brown said.
