Memorial Day was remembered and honored in the City of Millbrook, with a large gathering of people at the new Millbrook Senior Center May 27.

The Memorial Day service was held outside, with the backdrop as a giant American Flag courtesy of the Millbrook Fire Department. Many took advantage of the 100-foot long porch and the shade it provided.

Stuart Peters served as the Master of Ceremony and led the large crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The National Anthem was sung beautifully by Katie Stuart, SEHS Special Education Department.

The invocation was led by Pastor Brannon Bowman, Millbrook Presbyterian Church.

The history of the Poppy/Poem was explained by William “Chip” Jordan, American Legion Post 133.

A Laying of the Wreath was conducted by Millbrook Mayor Al Kelley and Commander Jordan.

There was a moment of silence concluding with Taps thanks to Frank Grizzell, American Legion Rider.

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for honoring the men and women who have died while serving in the United States military, said Millbrook Mayor Al Kelley. It became an official holiday to be observed on the last Monday in May.

“We thought it was fitting for our community to conduct a Memorial Day Observance ceremony,” Kelley said. “We are a grateful community and honor the memory of our loved ones who courageously gave their lives for our country.”

Kelley said that Memorial Day is a day to honor the fallen, but no one has to wait until Veterans Day in November to show support of living veterans. He asked for a show of hands of all veterans present. He then introduced four special guests, all WWII Veterans, in attendance. They were: Eugene Thomas Beasley, James Dozier, Carl Edwards and John L. Zent.

Unable to attend was Donald Hayhurst. Mayor Kelley asked for those present to send up prayers for Hayhurst who is in fragile health. Hayhurst has been a huge supporter of the Millbrook Public Library and other community initiatives.
