GULF SHORES, Ala. (May 18, 2022) – Alabama Gulf Seafood announced today the winner of the 7th Annual Alabama Seafood Cook-Off, Chef Jeffrey Compton from The Battery in Birmingham. Chef Compton competed against three other talented chefs and took home the winning prize.

Runner up was Morgan McWaters from the Depot in Auburn.

The event – held Monday, May 16 – kicked off at 6pm at The Lodge at Gulf State Park, giving chefs one hour of cook time each. The open terrace provided the chefs a beautiful beach backdrop to prepare their dishes. ‘Panini’ Pete Blohme served as event emcee and guided the four chef teams to the finish line.

“We are so excited to announce Chef Compton as our ASCO winner this year,” said Chris Blankenship, commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and program administrator of the Alabama Seafood Marketing Commission. “This event continues to get bigger and better each year, and we are thrilled to celebrate our Alabama chefs with such a competitive competition.”

Chef Compton’s winning dish was butter poached redfish along with new potato and blue crab salad, late spring vegetables, lemon bay aioli and garden herbs. He will go on to compete at the Great American Seafood Cook-Off (GASCO) in New Orleans, which will be August 6 of this year and will see chefs across the nation competing to be deemed as the top seafood chef in America.

“It’s a huge honor to be deemed the top chef in the state of Alabama,” said Chef Compton. “My competitors were tough to beat, and it’s exciting we have such talent within our home state. I am excited and honored to represent our state on a national level in a few months to showcase the bountiful seafood Alabama has to offer.”

The Cook-Off was live-streamed from WSFA 12 News and additional information can be found on their website.
