Autauga County – Keeping the city and county clean of litter and trash is a priority for local leaders, as was prioritized again on Wednesday as the Prattville Area Chamber of Commerce, the Autauga County Commission, the City of Prattville, and Autauga County PALS once again promoted this year’s Bob Lee Spring Clean Up, which takes place on April 23.

Jay Thompson, Autauga County Commission Chairman and Prattville Mayor Bill Gillespie, along with members of the chamber and the county’s Solid Waste Officer John-Paul O’Driscoll thanked county and city litter crews who work every day keeping the community clean.

“We’re here today to thank the litter crew for the City of Prattville and Autauga County,” said O’Driscoll. “They’re in our roads every day and cleaning up every day from people who throw litter. The Autauga County PALS and the chamber of commerce wanted to give them a gift certificate to say thank you.”

Gillespie agreed with O’Driscoll and said, “As I travel around the state or other local communities, I think one thing the City of Prattville is very well known for is how clean out city is. So, I just want to say thank you. The war on litter, I wish I could say one day you would be able to defeat that. No one person can do everything. It takes an organization.”

Thompson also thanked O’Driscoll for his leadership in the effort.

“He’s kind of a one-man crew for the county,” he joked. “I appreciate all you’ve done for the last two years by yourself. It’s Spring Clean Up and you have a new beginning. When you clean everything up and like the mayor said, the war on litter, it’s like a new beginning every day. We appreciate all our community volunteers as well.”

Gillespie and Thompson handed out gift cards to the members of the litter crew thanking them for their hard work.

During Spring Clean Up, volunteers can tie bagged litter and leave it in the right-of-way for pickup by county and city litter crews. All volunteers are encouraged to report clean ups to Alabama PALS at www.alpals.org.
