Autauga Academy senior Anden Hilyer accepted a scholarship offer to Delta State University, joining eight other players who announced their intentions to continue playing collegiately on National Signing Day.

Hilyer, the second leading tackler for the Generals this season, was recruited by Delta State to play linebacker, although his coach, Bobby Carr, thought he was better suited for offense.

“The Gulf South Conference is really good football,” Carr said. “That’s a perfect fit for him. I kind of liked him on the offensive side because I’m an offensive guy, but the thing about him is he brings so much to the table it was a no brainer for them. He could, eventually, move to the offensive side of the ball.”

Hilyer said he was thankful for the opportunity to continue playing at the collegiate level.

“First off, I’d like to think God for giving me the ability to play the game I love (and) my family for doing all they do to put me in this position,” Hilyer said. “I’d like to think Coach Ray (Rudolph) for helping so much with recruiting and being so supportive through the whole process. I’d also like to thank Coach Carr for always pushing me to be the best player I can be on and off the field.

“A huge thank you to (teammate) Lake (Barber) for pushing me harder than I’ve ever been pushed. Thank you to my Autauga Academy family for being the biggest supporters and to all my people for being behind me through this process.”

Hilyer was the second leading tackler on the defense this season with 85 tackles, including five for loss and three sacks, an impressive number considering he played sparingly in the second half of most games as the Generals built big leads by halftime.

On offense, he had 25 receptions for 374 yards and six touchdowns.

“A lot of times, the Division II schools have to wait until after signing day to see who the D-I schools kind of pick through,” Carr said. “It all worked out for Anden. He was looking for a home and Delta State was in need of a linebacker. I’m proud of him.

“He’s the only senior on our team that was a three-year starter. In his four years on the varsity, he was a part of three state championships and one national championship. He saved his best game for the last game, where he had 15 tackles in the state championship game and also scored a touchdown. I can’t wait to see how much he progresses on the next level.”
