AUTAUGA COUNTY – More details have come out concerning an off-duty Lowndes County Deputy who is jailed in Autauga County after allegedly shooting into an occupied vehicle, then wrecking the a Lowndes County unmarked vehicle he was driving, and being arrested for suspected DUI.

Identified as Michael J. Lewis, 21, of Deatsville, the now former deputy has charges that include attempted murder with a $60,000 bond, aggravated animal cruelty with a $15,000 bond, and Driving Under the Influence with a $1,000 bond.

According to Autauga County Sheriff Joe Sedinger, there was “some type of argument among people who knew each other,” late Friday night. It occurred on County Road 57 near Marbury. During that argument, Lewis allegedly shot into a vehicle with a person and a dog inside. The dog was struck and was taken to a veterinary clinic with serious injuries. The person inside the vehicle, “probably had their life saved because the shot hit the dog,” Sheriff Sedinger said.

Lewis then allegedly drove away from the scene. He wrecked the vehicle, Sedinger said, on Interstate 65. Troopers arrived for that accident and took Lewis into custody for DUI. He was booked into the Autauga Metro Jail just after midnight.

This case remains under investigation.
