Millbrook Area Chamber of Commerce Business Spotlight – Kingdom Dough

What happens when you mix a lawn-mowing business with an at-home baking service? If you guessed a donut shop, you’d be surprisingly correct.

Opened on September 26, 2020, Kingdom Dough in Millbrook has a wide variety of sweets and breakfast foods from cupcakes and donuts to biscuits and kolaches. Jeremey and Kimberly Powers are husband and wife, and owner and operators of Kingdom Dough. Their backgrounds come from two entirely different fields, but their one dream was to always own a storefront together.

“I owned my own lawn service and Kimberly was baking and selling goods from home. So, we kind of used our experience of owning a business and baking and merged the two things together,” Jeremy said.

The couple wanted to own the property for some time, and when the building was put up for sale last year, they jumped on the opportunity.

“It was a leap of faith,” Kimberly chuckled. “But we knew what we wanted and we made the decision to open up even in the midst of covid.”

The two knew for the past 10 years that they wanted to open their own business together, but the pieces never fell in the right places. When they were brainstorming names for their establishment, the idea came from an unlikely source.

“We had no idea what were going to call ourselves until about two weeks before we opened. We were all sitting around in the living room coming up with ideas, and our oldest daughter said the name ‘Kingdom Dough’. We all looked up and immediately knew that was going to be it,” Jeremy said.

Faith plays an extremely prominent role in the lives of the Powers, Jeremy said.

“Without God, none of this would be possible.”

Since opening, the Powers explained that the community reception has been one of open arms.

“Everyone here is very responsive and steady. We know most of our customers by face and name and we even know what they’re going to order when they come in,” Jeremy said.

The owners attribute, in part, a portion of their success to the Millbrook Chamber of Commerce, who Kimberly says has been wonderful in helping them promote their business.

“We wanted to be a part of the community, and the best way to be a part of the community is knowing the community. When you join the chamber it’s like you join another family,” Kimberly said. “Everybody supports you, from the YMCA, to the local bank and other businesses. They’ve just been so supportive of us every step of the way.”
