Giving Back: Christmas on the Coosa Queens Set up Collection Boxes with Help from Area Businesses

FROM JENIFER GLOVER

The Christmas on the Coosa Queens’ yearly service project is collecting toys for the Wetumpka Police Department toy drive. Due to COVID restrictions the toy drive was cancelled this year. However, we contacted the Elmore County food pantry. We were interested in the canned food drive to offer assistance. We learned from Kathy Hall, the executive director, that the Pantry normally also provides presents for their clients. Twenty-eight families benefited this year thanks to the efforts of the Elmore County Food Pantry and volunteers.

Our queens went into action and worked with local businesses to set up collection boxes at:

The Gab

First Community Bank-Wetumpka

Edgewood Academy

MCS Mortgage Corporation of the South

Millbrook Baptist Church

Diversified Alarm

We also received permission from the Wetumpka Police Department to donate the toys we had already collected at the pageant to the food pantry. In addition to the toys, our queens donated 30 gift cards to be given to teens.

Toys were collected through December 15th and we delivered them to the pantry December 16th. Kathy took our COTC Queens on a tour of the facility and explained the process clients go through when they shop at the pantry. Our COTC Queens are looking forward to volunteering at the pantry in 2021.
