Prattville Kindergarten had some very special visitors Friday, including Dee Jones, DVM and some others of the furry and feathered variety.

It was part of the school’s Farm Week studies, where the students learned the importance of farming and food production. It was also a chance to don costumes as cowboys, cowgirls, and many others whiling having the opportunity to be up close with cows, a horse, chickens, a sheep, farming equipment and more.

Dr. Jones is the State Public Health Veterinarian for the Alabama Department of Public Health. A Prattville resident, he was happy to spend the day with different classes at the school explaining the purpose of farm animals, farming and the how these things impact our daily lives. There is a great deal of work, thanks to our farmers, that brings the food to the grocery stories, and to the dining room table.

“Fewer children are growing up on the farm, yet farming and food production are crucial to America’s future. We hope school events like this provide kids with exposure to farm animals and farming practices,” Dr. Jones told the EAN.

Jones had some help in bringing the many animals and/or equipment to the school, and he thanked everyone who participated.

This past week students learned some basic information on how farming is so important, and the work it takes to make it happen.

Friday was a day for a lot of the students to pet a horse, cow or other animal for the first time, and check out farming equipment.

We appreciate Dr. Jones for his willingness to share his knowledge. You can follow Dr. Jones on Facebook, where he has interesting stories and photos about his animals, his patients, and his travels across the state. View his page at https://www.facebook.com/deev.m.page
