DOC Inmate Makes Brief Escape near Edgewood Academy This Afternoon, but Back in Custody

ELMORE/AUTAUGA NEWS

Edgewood Academy in Elmore County was placed on soft lockdown this afternoon, after a Department of Corrections inmate made a brief escape, but has been recaptured.

A prison transport had stopped briefly in front of the school on Hwy. 14 and the inmate was apparently able to exit the vehicle and flee on foot. He was quickly recaptured. We understand he was located in Elmore near the Chevron Station, but are working to get more details.

Parents of students at Edgwood Academy received notification concerning the event, and information is below:

“Parents:

Right about the time elementary pickup line was beginning today, we were in soft lockdown for about ten minutes inside the building due to a local inmate escape from DOC.

Thankfully, he was quickly apprehended. Many thanks to our local LEOs who kept us informed quickly of both the escape the recapture.

I just wanted to let you know in case your child came home today talking about going into lockdown, since it happened so fast I didn’t even have time to get an update out via social media or email when the escape occurred.

As always, thank you for trusting us with your children.”

We have reached out to the Department of Corrections for more information concerning the recapture and will update when possible.
