The American Legion W. Clyde Northington Post 122 of Prattville celebrated its 90th birthday Thursday evening, Sept. 10, 2020, with a special celebration, as well as honoring the memory and service of its namesake. Family members of Northington were recognized during the celebration.
Prattville Mayor Bill Gillespie presented the Legion members with a Commendation in honor of its long service to the community.
It reads:
Whereas, the American Legion was charted and incorporated by congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness; and
Whereas, the Prattville American Legion Post No. 122 was charted September 10, 1930. In 1970, Post No. 122 was renamed to honor W. Clyde Northington. He was born in Prattville, Alabama in 1948. He joined the Marines in 1967, and was awarded the Silver Star for his brave and courageous efforts during a combat mission in 1969. He paid the ultimate sacrifice in the Vietnam War on March 4, 1969, and
Whereas, the members of the American Legion Post No. 122 served their county well and are eager to serve our community. Post No. 122 has many programs that serve citizens and veterans in our community. They host the Memorial and Veterans Day ceremonies and provide meals and various items to those in need. They are always stepping up to give back to families that need additional assistance during the Holidays; and

Whereas, serving the Prattville community for 90 years is an incredible accomplishment. The impact made by the American Legion Post No. 122 over the last 90 years has been invaluable to our city.
Now, Therefore, I, Bill Gillespie, Jr., Mayor of the City of Prattville do hereby commend The American Legion W. Clyde Northington Post No. 122 on their 90th Anniversary in Prattville, Alabama, and congratulate them for 90 years of outstanding service in our community.
