Consider it a Thanksgiving celebration in September.

The American Legion Post 133 in Millbrook has an annual event where the organization celebrates and shows appreciation for area First Responders. This year’s event on September 11 at the American Legion will include a Thanksgiving dinner with all of the trimmings, and first responders are invited to come and enjoy. It is also a day to remember the victims of the terrorist attacks on this country on Sept. 11, 2001. The ceremony will begin at 1 p.m.

The ceremony’s guest speaker is Millbrook Police Chief P.K. Johnson.

In a time when some people seem to have forgotten the sacrifices of First Responders, the American Legion wants to remind area residents of the importance of heroes. They also want to remember and honor the thousands of victims who were killed when two planes crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field. When the Trade Center towers fell, there were still so many people trapped inside, and First Responders racing to help were casualties as well.

On Flight 93, every day citizens fought with terrorists to gain control of the plane before it was used as another weapon of destruction. All aboard perished.

From Commander Leslie Jeffries Looney: “Join us as we honor and remember the victims of 9/11 and our First Responders. The ceremony will be followed by a traditional Thanksgiving feast to pay homage to the men and women who put their lives on the line everyday to serve and protect.”
