Autauga BOE Mandates Masks; Potential Delays for School Opening is Possible as Well

The Autauga County Board of Education met on Monday to further discuss the handling of the 2020-2021 school year. It was revealed by Autauga County Superintendent Spence Agee that the roadmap for the school system, which was initially adopted on July 9, had been modified.

The roadmap now states that students across the county are required to wear masks when switching classes or in situations where they might be closer than six-feet-apart.

“Safety is our main concern, so facemasks will be required in the hallway or in any place where students cannot social distance,” Agee said.

The original roadmap suggested that students should wear masks but did not require them to do so.

During the meeting, it was explained that if a single student tests positive for COVID-19, then that school would shut down for two days and the remaining students would move to virtual learning while the school is sanitized.

Students who do test positive for the virus can return to school 10 days after testing, as long as they are asymptomatic.

With so many moving parts and uncertainty surrounding the whole situation, Agee also said that there is a possibility that schools could move opening day to September 8, instead of the already planned August 13.

“This roadmap is a living and breathing document and is subject to change from week to week,” Agee explained.

Masks will not be required for students while they are in the classroom; however, they will be required for teachers.
