Just two days after traveling to Mobile for a hard fought playoff game against #3 St. Paul’s in the 2nd round of the Class 5A playoffs, in which they were tied 1-1 at halftime, five seniors from the girls’ soccer team were presented with numerous academic scholarships and awards.
University of Alabama
Ramsey Grimes, the Mustangs’ goalkeeper, will be attending the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. She received an academic scholarship from Alabama for the UA Competitive Housing ($10,000), the Alabama Prestige Scholarship ($11,918 per year), the John A and Laura P Carriger Scholarship ($5000), the Julia and Arnold Teks Endowment Scholarship ($500), and the UA Leadership and Achievement Scholarship ($1,000). She also received the following DYW scholarships: Roberta Pitcher Spirit Award ($325) and Self-Expression ($325). Grimes received the following VWF scholarships: Local ($100), District ($150), State ($1500), and National ($2500). Further, she received a $500 Junior Ambassador award.
Auburn University
Madelyn Espy, a 6-year varsity soccer player, will be attending Auburn University. Espy received the Spirit of Auburn academic scholarship ($5,000 per year). She also received $2000 from Junior Ambassadors, $250 from Junior Miss, and $1000 from Miss SEHS. Further, Espy is an SEHS finalist for the Joe Sewell award which will be determined on May 5.
Sarah Grace Nickerson, a 5-year varsity soccer player, will be attending Auburn University. She received the Spirit of Founders Academic Scholarship ($9,000 per year). She also received a scholarship from the Millbrook Mens’ Club ($1,000) and the Reverend AW Watkins Scholarship ($1250).
Emily Peterson, one of two captains on SEHS’ area championship team, will be attending Auburn University. Peterson received the Montgomery Area Military Officers Scholarship Foundation ($5,000), and is awaiting the National MAMOSF Award that will be given out on May 19. Peterson also received the Maxwell-Gunter Spouses Club $1,000, and the Reverend AW Watkins Scholarship ($1250). She is also awaiting announcements from the Air Force scholarships and Military Fisher House Scholarship through the Maxwell Commissary.
Undecided
Maria Almendarez, a center-midfielder from the girls’ soccer team, received a scholarship from the Junior Ambassadors. She also received the prestigious Math award from the school. Almendarez hopes to become a Marine biologist.
