The Elmore County Commission recognized Wetumpka High School senior JD Denmark during a special presentation, Feb. 26, 2026, at the Elmore County Courthouse, honoring his achievement as the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A Indoor Track and Field Shot Put champion.

Denmark secured the state title with a throw of 52 feet, setting both a personal record and a new school record. His coach, Greg May, who attended the presentation, said the milestone is only the beginning.

“That was just indoor,” said May. “We are preparing right now for the outdoor season, and we’re looking for bigger and better things going into the outdoor season. We still have some more goals. He’s our champion, and we’re looking forward to seeing what else he can do.”

In addition to excelling in track and field, Denmark also played football for Wetumpka High School. District 1 Commissioner Henry Hines praised Denmark’s well-rounded dedication to athletics and academics.

“If you ask me, you [Denmark] just do a little bit of everything,” said Hines. “You’re an outstanding student and a great leader for the community. As an old alumni, I love track, but I was slow. You’re strong.”

District 5 Commissioner Desera Lewis echoed Hines’s remarks, reflecting on her own experience in track and field.

“He [Hines] was the slow one, but I was a sprinter,” said Lewis. “Track and field are very, very personal to me. Y’all [Wetumpka High School] have a great program.”

Following remarks from commissioners, Denmark was presented with a resolution honoring his state championship accomplishment.
