From: Chief P.K. Johnson
Millbrook Police Department
On Thursday, October 9, 2025, at approximately 6:13 PM, Millbrook police and fire rescue units responded to a traffic collision involving multiple vehicles on Highway 14, between Kinsley Lane and Oak Tree Road.
Upon arrival, responding officers encountered a total of involved (4) vehicles, with multiple individuals suffering from life threatening injuries. Citizens, to include an off duty law enforcement officer, who were rendering aid, extricating the injured from vehicles and administering CPR as law enforcement and fire personnel arrived on scene.
Three victims were pronounced deceased at the scene, with two individuals being treated by paramedics and later transported to a local hospital, with one listed in critical condition.
Three victims pronounced deceased at the scene have been identified as follows:
Anthony L. Smith, a 33-year-old Demopolis resident
Diane E. Smith, a 65-year-old resident of Indiana
Mary F. Ford, a 60 –year-old resident of Millbrook
The scene was turned over to the Millbrook Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit for investigation.
We are in the very preliminary stages of this investigation at this time. We have video footage of this traffic collision, which was captured by a motorist/witness, whose vehicle was equipped with a dash mounted video camera. We are thankful this witness came forward and provided this video evidence to our investigators.
Based on video evidence captured and witness statements, it appears that one of the vehicles involved was travelling westbound on Highway 14 and suddenly veered into the opposing traffic lane colliding with a vehicle travelling eastbound, which overturned, colliding with two additional vehicles. Both eastbound and westbound lanes of traffic had to be shutdown, with traffic diverted, as fire rescue units and law enforcement units attempted to render medical aid and clear the scene.
As stated earlier, our traffic homicide investigators are in the very preliminary stages of this traffic crash investigation. Right now our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. Our investigators will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of this tragic collision, which will hopefully allow us to provide these victims and their families with some answers.
Anytime that a tragedy such as this occurs, there are those who speculate as to the cause of such events, with some offering opinions and perceived solutions. Unfortunately, much of this occurs on social media, with little or no thought process as to who may view this material. I would ask the public to consider this before posting photographs of the scene or their opinions out of respect and consideration for the victims and their family members who are attempting to process this tragedy.
I want to convey my sincere appreciation to the many citizens who stopped to render aid to the victims, as there were many. I also want to thank the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Prattville Police Department, Elmore County Sheriff’s Office, Millbrook Fire Department, Alabama Department of Transportation and the Millbrook Street Department for their response and assistance in this case.
