After a devastating fire that destroyed The Woods Apartment complex on Sixth Street in Prattville this past weekend, Michelle Edwards is like so many other caring individuals in our community. She just wants to help. We have been receiving questions and emails from so many of you.
As it is over the weekend, officials say that by Monday it is hoped an more organized plan will be in place. The American Red Cross has already stepped in trying to assist.
With 26 families displaced, so many area residents have come forward, asking how they can help. Area churches are collecting donations, the Autauga Interfaith Care Center of Prattville is helping to organize plans, and hopefully in the coming week much needed help will be arriving. Camellia Baptist Church stepped up quickly as well, giving residents temporary shelter.
Michelle is a member and volunteer with Trinity United Methodist Church, just one of so many area organizations reaching out to help.
Just after 2 a.m. Saturday the Prattville Fire Department got the first call on the blaze, and joined by Prattville Police and other First Responders rushed to the scene.
Neighbors and First Responders knocked on doors, making sure everyone was out of the apartments and brought to a safe area.
The scene is hard to view. People have lost all of their belongings, are trying to find places to stay and so many escaped with just the clothes they were wearing.
But this amazing community can and will do everything possible to bring aid, hugs and smiles in an extremely difficult time.
“I am collecting clothing donations for the 26 families who lost everything in the fire on 6th street,” Michelle said on social media. “I will be going through AICC to help distribute them. I will be gathering and sorting them at Trinity United Methodist Church. If you have something to donate I can arrange to meet you. Contact me via text at 334-318-7385.”
Beginning Monday, the church office will be open from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. through Thursday. If you need to drop something off at a different time, please text Michelle and she will try to make accommodations if possible.
Father, Son and Holy Ghost Church is also collecting donations on Sixth Street.
