Larry Caver, President
Old Autauga Historical Society (OAHS)
AUTAUGA COUNTY has just lost a treasure this morning. Benjamin “Russell” Wood, 95, of Statesville, passed away at 6:50 A.M. Russell is believed to be the LAST native-born resident who served in WWII. He was born, lived, and died in AUTAUGA COUNTY. Russell played baseball as a young man for the Autaugaville semi-pro team. He was also a member of the County Board of Revenue for several years.
We extend our condolences to his widow, Catherine, and son Rusty, who are both members of OAHS, as well as to his daughters, Catherine and Becky, and host of other relatives.
The funeral will be held this FRIDAY or SATURDAY at Ivy Creek Methodist Church. It will be for family only. However, Old Autauga Historical Society (OAHS) will be present along the drive from AL Hwy 14 to Ivy Creek Church. VOLUNTEERS will stand 6 feet apart on both sides holding up US Flags as Russell makes his final journey to the church for burial. We will post more details (time) before then.
If you are willing and able to help with this effort, let me know. John Dennis has extra flags to use for the event.
