The City of Wetumpka approved a $20,000 partnership with the Wetumpka YMCA, May 4, 2026, to fund an indoor Y Town.
Y Towns are interactive mini cities designed as imaginative, hands-on environments where children can explore, play, and learn by taking on real-world roles and responsibilities within a simulated community.
“Part of that could be a police department and a fire department that helps connect our young people with first responders,” said Comptroller Tay Knight. “They are recommending that we participate in having those areas branded with any type of Wetumpka Police or Wetumpka Fire information, logos, uniforms, and things like that, so it feels real.”
The Wetumpka YMCA, which recently broke ground on a $1.2 million makeover, is building their mini town as part of their mission to create a more welcoming, functional, and inspiring space for families.
“We appreciate our partners and certainly the City of Wetumpka as one of those,” said Wetumpka YMCA Vice President of Operations Bill Myers. “We’ve had a lot of partners and donors that have stepped up to make this possible, so we’re excited about how this new expansion, including Y Town, is going to further serve the Wetumpka community.”
Meyers explained that the Wetumpka Y Town, which will be located in the old group exercise room, is intended as a new spin on their Child Watch program, where parents can drop off their children to play while they exercise. A mock firehouse, police station, bank, and other local businesses will be included in the community.
Wetumpka Y Town and other renovations are scheduled to be completed before the ribbon cutting on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at 10 a.m. For more information about the Wetumpka YMCA, visit https://ymcamontgomery.org/locations/wetumpka-ymca/.
