The Elmore County Emergency Management Agency will offer Community Emergency Response Team training (CERT) for citizens beginning Monday, February 23rd, through Saturday, February 28th. These classes are offered annually every February and will be from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday, and 9:00 a.m., to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.

The CERT program educates participants about disaster preparedness for the hazards that may impact our area and trains them in basic disaster response skills such as small fire suppression, light search and rescue, personal and family preparedness, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Bethany Elliott, Deputy Director for Elmore County EMA and C.E.R.T program manager, is passionate about teaching the community and preparing them for disaster.

“The overall goal is to educate members of the community about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact our area. It trains them in basic disaster response skills. Using the hands-on training learned from our course, members are prepared to help themselves, their families, and community during a major disaster when professional responders are delayed or not readily available,” stated Elliot.

Course instructors will be EMA staff and local first responders.

This is a free 20-hour CERT course who wants to:

  • Keep themselves, family, neighbors, & the community safe; before, during, and after an emergency or disaster strikes.
  • Be prepared to help when disaster strikes until professional responders arrive and learn how to communicate and interact with responders in the most efficient way.
  • Learn basic preparedness, fire safety, light search & rescue, medical triage & treatment, terrorism, CERT organization, and disaster psychology. This course culminates with a simulated disaster exercise.
