Millbrook Police officers were called to a mobile home park on the Alabama River Parkway around 6 p.m. Friday night for an apparent domestic issue. The suspect in that issue reportedly left the scene, and officers attempted to stop the vehicle.

The vehicle headed into Millbrook and eventually to the I-65 service road. Before officers could make contact, the driver reportedly drove behind Real Life Church. There the vehicle went over the edge of a 60-to-70 -foot ravine. Several officers’ vehicles narrowly missed the same fate, with an Autauga County Sheriff’s vehicle front wheel over the edge. Blake’s Towing employees were able to safely pull the patrol car back from the edge. No officers were injured.

The unidentified driver did not survive the accident, officials said.

Rescue personnel from both the Millbrook and Prattville Fire Departments were on scene, making their way into the ravine. They discovered that a dog was in the vehicle at the time of the accident, but somehow survived.

First Responders were able to secure the dog. It was carefully carried back up the high embankment to be checked by animal control officers.

As of 10 p.m., police and fire crews were still on scene, as they worked to recover the vehicle. Officials said the removal of the vehicle could involve a crane because of the depth of the ravine.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is now handling the accident investigation.
