The Marbury Bulldogs Boys Varsity Soccer team traveled to Dothan the first weekend of March to participate in the Gold Division of the Wiregrass Cup, hosted by Houston Academy. The Bulldogs won all three games in dominant fashion, led by Ricardo Rangel and Ryan Lavender who each scored five goals in three games played.

“This was the first tournament victory for the boy’s program, and I cannot be prouder of this team, their accomplishment, and the way in which they carried themselves throughout the tournament,” Marbury Head Coach Thomas Sowell

The Bulldogs defeated Ariton High School in the opening match of the tournament, winning 7-0.

Rangel and Lavender both scored two goals apiece, while Aidan Destin, Jeremy Bailynemard, and Will Walker each had one goal.

In the second game of the tournament, Marbury faced a physical team from G.W. Long High School. Rangel, Lavender, and Destin each had a goal and the Bulldogs won 3-1.

In the final game of the tournament, Marbury went up 2-0 in the first half, but Northside Methodist scored two goals to send the game into the half tied 2-2.

The Bulldogs excelled in the half, scoring three goals and cruising to a 5-2 victory. For the game, Rangel and Lavender again had two goals apiece, while Chris Daughtry added a goal to complete the scoring.

“I am very proud of how the boys played this weekend. They really exemplified our team’s core values and really bought in to our team is family mentality. The boys faced a lot of adversity with the rainy conditions, and I was happy to see them overcome those conditions and perform admirably,” Sowell said.

Marbury’s record stands at 5-2 as they hope the strong showing in the Wiregrass Cup will propel the Bulldogs to a strong finish to the regular and post-season.
