The Prattville- Millbrook Sunrise Rotary Club hosted the third annual Waffle Cook-off at the Alabama Wildlife Federation Nature Center at Lanark Park in Millbrook Saturday from 10 a.m.- noon.

Ticket prices were $15 for entry and included tastes of all three categories of waffles in the cook-off, the best waffles, best waffles with jazz and best waffles with chicken were the three main categories and then there was also a people’s choice award this year as well. Winners were selected by the patrons by putting money into the favorite team’s bucket; the team with the highest amount at the end would win that category.

The best waffle is a category that highlighted traditional waffles themselves, the best waffle with jazz highlighted the creativity of the cook teams. The jazz waffles fruit, whipped cream, chocolate sauce and other delicious waffle toppings.

The best waffles with chicken category also highlighted some of the creativity of the cook teams with toppings such as the chicken salad, chili or sausage gravy.

The people’s choice award went to Max Credit Union, the first place plain waffle category went to  Welcome Food Pantry, the first place chicken and waffle category went to Max Credit Union and the first place waffle with jazz category went to Mandi Fortner with State Farm.

“Depending On your palette you may want something a little extra, so we are giving folks that are cooking an opportunity to enter into one of three, two of three or all three categories. It’s really amazing how creative the cook teams get and how they interpret their dish.,” president of the Prattville- Millbrook Sunrise Rotary Club, Jamie Brown said.

The Prattville- Millbrook Sunrise Rotary Club started on May 26th, 1999 and now has a consistent 30 members to the club that meets weekly at the Alabama Nature Center at Lanrark Pavilion. The waffle cook-off is their largest fundraiser all year and the proceeds from this event will go towards local nonprofits in Elmore and Autauga counties that work with the Prattville- Millbrook Sunrise Rotary club.

“We give these funds right back to the community in the form of grants and nonprofits,”  Brown said.

Earlier this year the Sunrise Rotary Club awarded $11,000 in grants to 13 local non-profit organizations. Some of the organizations that were awarded grants included the Autauga Interfaith Care Center, numerous local YMCAs, W.E.L.C.O.M.E Food Pantry, Butterfly Bridge Child Advocacy Center and the Alabama Wildlife Federation to name a few.

The Rotary motto is service above self, we love to serve our community and we love to give back to those organizations that are doing great work in Autauga and Elmore county” Brown said.

The grant process for this year will be closing next week and last year’s proceeds from the Waffle Cook-off were able to help fund over nine organizations, Brown confirmed.
