Autauga County Schools, Notes from the Nurse: Increased Communicable Illness Cases

FROM AUTAUGA COUNTY SCHOOLS

District schools are beginning to experience increased cases of COVID, flu, RSV, and strep throat. During the holiday break, please help Autauga County Schools slow the spread of germs by emphasizing these simple measures that will help keep your children and family healthy.

Frequent and vigorous hand washing for at least 20 seconds with soap and water.

Covering mouths with tissues or elbow when coughing or sneezing

Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouths.

Stay home until fever, diarrhea, and vomit-free for 24 hours.

Follow Center for Disease Control and health care provider guidelines for isolation periods for COVID and flu.

Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces or common areas with 1:10 parts bleach and water solution.

Do not share cups, water bottles, or eating utensils.

Seek health care provider guidance for vaccinations.

Symptoms of these highly contagious infections include fever, chills, headache, muscle & joint pain, sore throat, runny nose, persistent coughing & sneezing, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and extreme fatigue. If your child begins to show symptoms of these illnesses, a visit to your health care provider is strongly encouraged. Your health care provider can provide testing to determine the cause of the symptoms and administer the proper treatment options. In addition, a note from your health care provider can provide guidance on safe return to school and prevent any truancy issues. If left untreated, these infections could develop into chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease.

If you choose not to seek medical guidance, please remember the Autauga County Schools’ policy, “When to Keep Your Child at Home,” which mandates children must be 24 hours free of fever, diarrhea, or vomiting without the help of any medication before returning to school.
