On Saturday, November 18, 2023, the City of Wetumpka became known as the “City of Champions” as multiple Wetumpka Youth Football & Cheerleading League teams brought back to the city championship trophies. The Wetumpka Youth Football & Cheerleading League’s Sophomore age division (8U) and Junior age division (10U) competitive cheer teams both won 1st place in the East Alabama Youth Football League’s 2023 Cheer Competition. The Wetumpka cheer teams faced fierce competition as they competed against competitive cheer teams from Camp Hill, Dadeville, Eclectic, Macon County, Reeltown, and Tallassee. Additionally, The East Alabama Youth Football League’s 2023 Cheer Competition featured a Cheer Jump Off competition where the following Lady Indians brought home individual trophies: 2nd Place Sophomore age division (8U), Kennedy Lucy; 1st Place Junior age division (10U), Rylie Chander; and 2nd Place Junior age division (10U), Paisley Gassman.
Continuing the day, the East Alabama Youth Football League’s 2023 Football Championship game was held in Macon County where the #1 ranked Wetumpka Youth Football & Cheerleading League Junior age division (10U) football team led by Head Coach Curtis King went up against the #2 ranked Reeltown Rebels. The Junior age division (10U) football team brought home the East Alabama Youth Football League’s Junior Division Championship Trophy defeating the Reeltown Rebels 24-0. The Juniors (10U) football team completed the regular season undefeated at 7-0 and 9-0 overall bringing back to the Wetumpka Youth Football & Cheerleading League and the City of Wetumpka their second championship trophy in two years within this age division as they are Back-2-Back league champions (TCYFCC-2022 and EAYFL-2023).
The success of the Wetumpka Youth Football League is a direct result of the countless volunteer hours and dedication that each coach and WYFCL Executive Board Members have put in this season, hard work of the players and cheerleaders, and continued support of the parents. The Wetumpka Youth Football & Cheerleading League would also like to extend a huge thank you and recognize the City of Wetumpka Parks and Recreation Department, the Wetumpka Middle School along with the Wetumpka High School Varsity Cheerleaders under the direction of Alex Roberts for their support this season. Because of their continued support the Wetumpka Youth Football & Cheerleading League continues to thrive and positively impact the lives of youth within our area.
