The Prattville City Council met Tuesday Nov. 7th with a multitude of resolutions and a hefty consent agenda.
A special election will be held at a later date to fill the vacancy in City Council District five.
Blair Gornto offered his resignation at the last regular council meeting last month, saying he has taken a new job that would not allow him to remain in his elected position.
The council voted unanimously Tuesday to fill the seat with a special election, date to be determined. They took this option rather than appointing someone to fill the unexpired term.
In his report to council, Mayor Gillespie invited up area legislators Sen. Clyde Chambliss, and Representatives Kelvin Lawrence and Jerry Starnes for a brief legislative update.
Sen. Chambliss reported that all funds have been paid back in full to the Alabama Trust Fund, the final $437 million. “That is a big deal in our state, we said we were going to pay it back, and we did,” Chambliss said..
Lawrence stated that the House of Representatives passed the overtime tax. This piece of legislation will give employees and employers tax exempt status of overtime work or any hours worked over 40 hours.
“That is something that I think is very much needed in a time with the cost-of-living increases and inflation, this is where I think this will not only affect Autauga County but the state of Alabama. This piece of legislation benefits everybody,” Lawrence said.
Rep. Starnes said it was good to be back before the Council, as he once served the City in that capacity. He thanked the council members for the work they do and reminded them that he, and other local representatives, are always willing to listen to concerns and help wherever possible.
Aside from agenda items and discussions, the council also went into executive session but returned without taking any action.
All resolutions on the agenda were adopted in Tuesday’s meeting.
