73-year-old Millbrook Grandfather Stabbed, in Serious Condition; Grandson Cameron Held without Bond

FROM CHIEF P.K. JOHNSON

MILLBROOK POLICE DEPARTMENT

Updated to include new information concerning Cameron Jackson now being held without bond in the Elmore County Jail. He will face an Aniah’s Law hearing in the coming week. The sheriff’s website should be updated soon.

On Saturday, September 23, 2023, Millbrook police officers responded to a domestic disturbance in the 3600 block of Brookwood Drive. Upon arrival, officers discovered Mervin Brown, a 73-year-old Millbrook resident, who was suffering from a stab wound to his abdomen. Mr. Brown was treated at the scene and transported to Baptist South Hospital for evaluation and treatment of his injuries, which were possibly life threatening. Brown was listed in critical condition.

The alleged offender, later identified as Cameron Jackson, a 24-year-old Millbrook resident, was taken into custody at the scene, which was turned over to detectives with the department’s Criminal Investigations Unit. Jackson was placed under arrest, being charged with one count of Domestic Violence 1st Degree (Assault) and one count of Domestic Violence 3rd Degree, and later transported to the Elmore County Jail. UPDATE: He is being held without bond at this time. The sheriff’s office website had him listed as released under $6,000 bond, which is not correct. He will be held without bond and will face an Aniah’s Law hearing in the coming week. The sheriff’s roster should be updated soon.

“According to witness statements, this assault stemmed from a verbal altercation between Mr. Jackson and his mother over his failure to assist with household chores. The altercation apparently turned physical at some point, which resulted in law enforcement being called to the scene. The victim, Mr. Brown, apparently attempted to restrain Jackson until law enforcement arrived, at which point Jackson allegedly produced a knife, stabbing his grandfather in the abdomen.

“Witnesses also stated that Jackson allegedly continued the assault, kicking his grandfather (Brown) after he was on the floor. Jackson was taken into custody at the scene without incident and transported to the Millbrook Police Department for processing, after which he was transported to the Elmore County Jail, pending warrants being obtained and served.

“After thirty-five years in law enforcement, you’d think that things wouldn’t surprise, shock or disturb you, as a law enforcement professional. Nothing could be farther from the truth. When I received notification of this incident, my first thought was what 24-year-old assaults a 73-year-old man, much less their own grandfather? Then, to make matters worse, the entire incident allegedly started because a 24-year-old man was asked to help with some household chores. I can’t imagine my mother having to ask for my help for anything, much less assaulting my mother and my grandfather. I’m afraid I don’t live in the same world that I grew up in. Parents and Grandparents should be loved, revered, and respected, never assaulted by their own blood.”
