Medicaid Waiver could be the answer for a Loved one in Need of constant care

From Michael Lamothe

Central Alabama Aging Consortium

What is Medicaid Waiver? It is a program designed to help disabled individuals and seniors who need home and community-based services who would otherwise require nursing facility level of care. If you or someone you know suffers from a chronic medical issue such as hypertension, COPD, cancer, or renal failure and now needs assistance with your daily living skills such as bathing, light housekeeping, cooking, the Med-Waiver program can help.

There are many residents in Elmore and Autauga counties who could use the Medicaid Waiver services offered through the State of Alabama at no cost to you.  Central Alabama Aging Consortium administers the Medicaid Waiver program for Autauga, Elmore, and Montgomery counties.

Once approved each client is assigned a case manager from CAAC to monitor the client’s service plan as well as their physical wellbeing. Our case managers conduct monthly face-to-face visits inside of the client’s home to monitor the services rendered by the direct service providers. Direct service providers supply services, which can include homemaker (light housekeeping), personal care (dressing, bathing), and skilled and unskilled respite for the family caregiver. We can also provide frozen meals delivery as well as pest control services. In addition, our case managers partner with outside entities to advocate and assist when additional services may be needed out of our scope of service.

There is an application process that can take as much as several months in some cases. Clients must meet income and asset eligibility requirements according to Medicaid guidelines.

CAAC services over 600 clients in Autauga, Elmore, and Montgomery counties and we continue to grow helping as many individuals as we can. What’s also special about the waiver program is that we service not only the elderly but those who have a disability as well. We have multiple clients under the age of 60 that greatly benefit from our services. If you know someone in the tri-county area we can help, call us. Central Alabama Aging Consortium has a range of programs from, Medicaid Waiver to the SenioRx program, that helps seniors pay for high-cost medications.
