Veterans’ Well-Being Town Hall, Job Fair coming to Anniston Wednesday

From Brandon Miller

Public Information Manager

Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs

ANNISTON, Ala. – The Partners of Alabama’s Challenge will host a veterans well-being town hall and resource and job fair at the City Meeting Center in Anniston on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, beginning at 10 a.m.

The town hall is inspired by a statewide effort called Alabama’s Challenge for Preventing Suicide Among Service Members, Veterans, and their Families (SMVF), which aims to combat the continuing stigma Veterans face with mental illness. Recently released data shows 143 Veterans in Alabama died by suicide in 2021, which is a rate higher than the national Veteran average and significantly higher than the national civilian average.

The town hall will feature a host of guests, including Anniston Mayor Jack Draper, Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Kent Davis, and Greg Raines from the Civilian Marksmanship Program.

The resource and job fair will feature more than 50 vendors. Veterans attending will have the opportunity to meet with local employers with positions to fill and a host of federal, state, and community resources, including representatives from the ADVA veterans service office in Calhoun County.
