On March 28th-30th, the Elmore County CNP Hot Spot Food truck was on-site at Elmore County High School which fed over 300 students, teachers, and staff each day. The food truck gave the students a choice of meats that consisted of grilled hamburgers on Tuesday, smoked pulled pork on Wednesday, and wood-smoked ribs on Thursday. If students did not like what was offered on the food truck, they still had the opportunity to get a meal from the cafeteria. The Hot Spot Food truck will be traveling around to different high schools for the remainder of the 2022- 2023 school year. This week the Hot Spot Food truck is on-site at Holtville High School to serve from Today through April 6th. At HHS, they will serve grilled cheeseburgers on Tuesday, wood-smoked ribs on Wednesday, and brisket tacos on Thursday for this week only.
“We have been working on The Hot Spot project for over a year,” said Cacyce Davis, director for Elmore County Child Nutrition Program. Davis continued, “It is truly a great opportunity for the students in Elmore County. It will provide a variety of new menu items for our students. We plan to incorporate Farm to School activities as well, which will provide fresh produce and protein items, such as beef, locally sourced from Alabama farmers. Our CNP foodservice professionals work hard each school day to prepare meals that research has shown to be among the healthiest, and nutritious that children receive. We love to be creative with the meals which helps encourage participation in our program so students are prepared for learning in the classroom. I would like to thank the Elmore County Board of Education, Alabama State Department of Education, our Superintendent Richard Dennis, and our Child Nutrition staff. Our CNP team is comprised of phenomenal foodservice professionals. They are true examples of serving with servants’ hearts and consistently go above and beyond for our students.”
“We are very excited for Elmore County to have our new food truck online,” said Richard Dennis. He continued, “I know everyone is excited – not just the students, but the employees as well to sample the smoked meat and other foods provided. Specifically, I have to rave about the ribs they are excellent!”
Davis and some of her CNP staff attended training back in November 2022 in Atlanta, Georgia at the Southern Thunder BBQ Cooking school. They learned from Pete and Don who shared their knowledge and their love of BBQ. They incorporated what they learned from the week of training on what kind of meals they can serve for their students in Elmore County.
