Marquet D. Shepheard, 33, of Montgomery was taken into custody Monday afternoon, after allegedly shoplifting from Walmart and leading officers on a foot chase through parts of Millbrook.

On October 31, 2022, at approximately 12:55 PM, Millbrook police responded to the Millbrook Walmart with regard to a theft in progress. Responding officers were advised that the suspect was last seen fleeing the business, on foot, running across Highway 14, towards Camp Grandview Road.

Responding officers observed the suspect run into the wood line, east of Camp Grandview Road. Officers were able to set up a perimeter around that area. Millbrook Communications received several calls from citizens in the area, who were able to provide information to the suspect’s location and direction of travel. Officers were able to locate the individual, who was taken into custody without incident, near Summit Holiness Church.

The individual, later identified as Marquet D. Shepheard, 33, of Montgomery, was positively identified as the individual who committed an alleged theft from the business. Shepheard was placed under arrest, being charged with Theft of Property 4th Degree and Criminal Trespass 3rd Degree. Shepheard was transported to the Millbrook Police Department, for processing and later transported to the Elmore County Jail, where he remains under a $1,000 bond.

Millbrook Police Chief P.K. Johnson said, “This is a perfect example of cooperation between a victim business, our citizens and law enforcement responding to a call for service. Walmart’s loss prevention personnel did an excellent job of providing pertinent information to our communications personnel, who were able to provide the suspect’s description and direction of travel to our responding officers, who were able to locate him and establish a perimeter as he continued to flee. At that point, we began to receive calls from citizens in the area, who were able to provide real-time updates with regard to the suspect’s location, which enabled officers to close the perimeter and take the suspect into custody, without incident or injury.

Johnson continued, “Our officer’s prompt response, knowledge of the area, coupled with excellent communication between all parties involved, enabled our officers to apprehend the alleged offender in quick fashion and without incident. I’ve said it many times, but I’ll repeat it until folks that insist upon committing these types of crimes in our City, particularly at this business understand. Walmart has excellent surveillance equipment and loss prevention personnel. Our officers take their jobs very seriously, are highly trained and do an outstanding job in responding to these calls for service, as evidenced by their performance in responding to this incident today.

“We have citizens that don’t mind, nor will they hesitate to contact law enforcement, providing us information in situations, as occurred Monday. So, when you commit these criminal offenses, run from law enforcement to avoid the consequences of your actions, chances are more often than not, you’ll go to the Elmore County Jail tired.”
