A two-year-old child found in the middle the road near Fitzpatrick Road in Elmore has been safely returned to its custodial grandparents, according to Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin.

The child was found alone earlier this morning and Elmore deputies arrived to take the child into safe custody.

They began knocking on doors in the area and on Third Street located the custodial grandparents, who Sheriff Franklin said had been sleeping when the child somehow managed to get out of the home. The grandparents live about a half of a mile away from where the child was located.

“DHR is involved and having a meeting with the grandparents now on a safety plan,” Sheriff Franklin said. “At this time we believe it was just a case of the child managing to get out of the house while the grandparents were sleeping. The child is safe. But this could have been a very bad situation, and we are just very glad at the outcome.”
